Rey Mysterio’s flying kick killed a beloved Mexican wrestler

In 2015, Mysterio was wrestling in Mexico during a tag team match. During the match, he hit Pedro Aguayo Ramírez with a flying kick, one of Mysterio’s most memorable moves. When he connected with Ramírez, the opposing wrestler fell unconscious on the ropes. At first, no one recognized how seriously Ramírez was injured.

After a few minutes, officials realized Ramírez was unconscious and stopped the match. He died in the hospital the next day. Ramírez was the son of a famous Mexican wrestling legend, Perro Aguayo. His death was a tough pill to swallow for Mysterio and the wrestling community in Mexico.

The Baja California state prosecutor’s office said Ramírez died from the blow in the ring. As Nola.com reports, the cause of death appeared to be a snapped vertebrae when his head hit the ropes. Mysterio was not charged.

World Wrestling Entertainment

In the early 2000s, Mysterio wrestled independently after the closure of WCW and appeared in the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Then, he returned to the United States and worked with IWA Mid-South, Xcitement Wrestling Federation and the Heartland Wrestling Association.

Mysterio signed for WWE in June 2002, where he faced famous wrestlers like Big Show, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins. He made his debut on July 25 in a win against Chavo Guerrero. After being defeated by Kurt Angle at SummerSlam, he formed a tag team with Edge to participate in the WWE Tag Team Championship. Unfortunately, they lost to Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit but won the rematch two weeks later.

In 2003, Mysterio won several Cruiserweight championships and the Tag Team Championships. At the time, Mysterio had a video camera called the «619 cam». He used to tape audience members with the camera during his entrance. Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero feuded after Guerrero slammed Mysterio on the steel steps to show his frustration of being unable to defeat the latter.

The feud ended when Guerrero defeated Mysterio in a steel cage match on September 9, 2005. However, two months later, Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was a significant loss to Mysterio because Guerrero was his real-life friend.

After nearly 13 years in WWE, Rey Mysterio decided to leave the franchise in 2015. He returned to AAA, and his first tag team match ended with the death of Perro Aguayo Jr. from a drop kick from Mysterio. The cause of the death was determined as cardiac arrest. He returned to the WWE in 2018 and has performed in several franchise divisions, including the Royal Rumble.

Favorite Rey Mysterio Quotes

With a long and illustrious career as a professional wrestler, Rey Mysterio has shared his thoughts on the profession in many interviews with the media.

Here are our favorite quotes from Rey Mysterio:

  • ” When you’re young, you don’t really think about what’s going on. At least, in my case, I was always so hooked on being so innovative and didn’t worry about what happened yesterday. I just wanted to focus on today and make it better. I was like that every day. I just made sure that every night I was at my best, at the best level I could be.” – Rey Mysterio
  • “‘Lucha Underground’ is the evolution of wrestling. It’s high-style, high-flying, fast-paced hybrid style wrestling, and we’re actually paying homage to lucha libre for the first time.” – Rey Mysterio
  • “What I have on my left calf is two skeletons; when you put them together, they form a heart, and it says, ‘Love till Death.’ That represents me and my wife – ’til death do us part.” – Rey Mysterio
  • “I literally wear a mask. When I take it off, I’m a father. I’m a husband. I like to come home, and I like to spend time with family, and I like to travel, and I like to have a good time. And I like to be a kid every now and giggle and play with my kids.” – Rey Mysterio
  • “I’ll never get my chest tatted up, and I’m not big on tattoos on the legs. I’m running out of space on my body; I’d like to get more but I haven’t figured out where I’ll put them or what I want to get.” – Rey Mysterio

3 Amazing Lessons From Rey Mysterio

Now that you know all about Rey Mysterio’s net worth, we’ll see what valuable lessons on life we can take away from his career as a professional wrestler.

Here are some of the best success lessons to learn from Rey Mysterio:

1. Don’t Be Afraid To Come Up With An Enigmatic Persona

Some of the most successful entertainers in the world achieve great success by hiding their true identities to create an air of mystery.

If you want to create an aura of mystique, take a leaf from Rey Mysterio’s books and wear a mask.

2. Take Advantage Of Your Family’s Efforts To Help You To Succeed

Rey Mysterio wouldn’t be where he is today if it wasn’t for the intense coaching and practical advice he received from his uncle.

Take advantage of their wisdom if you have a family tradition that can help you get on in life.

3. Always Support Your Kids To Pursue Their Ambition

When Rey Mysterio’s son decided to get involved in wrestling as well, he was there to give him all the help and guidance he needed to be the best wrestler possible.

Career

Klay Thompson started his career, like Marcus Trufant, at Washington State University, making the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team his first year.

As a sophomore, he led the Cougars to the Great Alaska Shootout Championship and was named its Most Outstanding Player.

That year, he also became the third-fastest Cougar to reach 1,000 points, earning him Pac-10 Player of the Week honors twice in a row.

When he was a junior, he became the third player in Cougar history to win first-team all-district honors twice during his career.

After recording 43 points during the 2011 Pac-10 Tournament, he declared himself for the 2011 NBA Draft to begin his professional career.

His Early Years

Klay Thompson was selected 11th overall by the Golden State Warriors, the same team that helped make Kevin Durant so wealthy.

His first season with the team saw his skills improve exponentially, and he was voted to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

In 2013, head coach Mark Jackson said that Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry made the best shooting duo in NBA history.

Curry and Thompson combined made 483 three-pointers, the most ever scored by an NBA duo at that time.

Thompson signed a four-year contract extension with the Warriors in 2014, and the next day, scored a career-high 41 points.

Shortly after, he set an NBA record by scoring 37 points in a single quarter, also a league record at the time.

By the end of the season, with Thompson’s help, the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Championships for the first time in 40 years.

Nothing But Net

Thompson opened the first six games of the 2016 season and became the first Warrior to score 60 points since Rick Barry in 1974.

Aside from that, Thompson also helped the Warriors win their second championship in three years, becoming the first in history to start the playoffs 12-0.

His winning streak extended to the 2017 season when the Warriors went on to sweep the series, earning a third NBA Championship title.

In 2018, he hit the NBA record of 14 threes, breaking Curry’s former record of 13, and he was named to the NBA All-Defensive team for the first time.

Unfortunately, after enjoying consecutive successful seasons, at the end of 2018, he suffered from a torn ACL that sidelined him.

Due to losing such a star player, the Golden State Warriors went on to lose the series in a 114-110 defeat to the Toronto Raptors.

While many of the highest-paid athletes in the world have dealt with game-ending injuries, it was certainly a blow to Thompson.

Injuries And Comebacks

Klay Thompson opted to stay with the Golden State Warriors in 2019, signing a five-year contract for $190 million.

The next day, he underwent surgery on his ACL, though recovery forced him to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season.

While he returned to practice in September 2020, it was announced in November that he would miss the upcoming season due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Shortly after, Thompson was assigned to the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s NBA G League affiliate, for rehab.

Despite missing two seasons, Klay Thompson made his comeback in January 2022 in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In Game 3 of the playoffs, he scored 26 points and passed Hall of Famer Ray Allen for third on the NBA playoffs all-time three-pointers list.

Making his comeback even sweeter was that, shortly after, he passed LeBron James for second on the NBA Finals all-time three-pointers list as well.

Thanks to Thompson’s return on the court, the Golden State Warriors went on to win another NBA Championship, the fourth of his career.

No Sign Of Stopping

At the start of 2023, Thompson became the only player in NBA history to record multiple games with over 12 three-pointers in a season.

In April, at the end of the 2022-23 season, he made his 300th three-pointer in a runaway victory against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Entering the 2023-24 season, he started off strong, nailing five three-pointers during a 106-95 win against the Houston Rockets.

However, during a game in November, he was involved in a brawl on the court with Timberwolves center Jaden McDaniels, which spiraled out of control.

Both players, along with Draymond Green, who put Rudy Gobert in a headlock, were fined $25k each for their part in the altercation.

Despite this hiccup, in December, Thompson made NBA history again, earning 14,455 career points total, putting him ahead of Rod Strickland on the All-Time Scoring list.

Although he has been playing for over a decade, it’s obvious that Klay Thompson hasn’t lost a bit of the skill that’s helped make him successful.

While he could retire now and enjoy his wealth, so far, he has made no mention of stepping away from the court any time soon!

Throughout his impressive professional wrestling career, Rey Mysterio has emerged victorious in many championships and tournaments.

Here are some examples of the awards and honors from Rey Mysterio’s career:

Steroid use controversy

In March 2007, Sports Illustrated wrote an article detailing an investigation of a steroid and HGH ring used by many professional athletes. Several current and former WWE wrestlers were named in the report, including Rey Mysterio, who was alleged to have used nandrolone and stanozolol.

Since it was against the Talent Wellness program of WWE, Mysterio received a 30-day suspension. In his defence, the dr*gs were a prescription for his knee and arm. On April 26, 2012, he was suspended for 60 days for a second violation of the wellness program.

Post AAA career

Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling signed Rey Mysterio in 1995. He faced the likes of Psicosis and Guerrera before leaving in March 1996 to join the World Championship Wrestling. He started in the Cruiserweight division, where he lost his first WCW Cruiserweight Championship to Malenko.

The next time they faced each other, Mysterio defeated Malenko to win his first Cruiserweight Championship. He remained champion for three months, successfully defending his title against Malenko, Ultimate Dragon and Super Calo. Finally, Malenko reclaimed the title at Halloween Havoc.

Mysterio earned his second Cruiserweight championship by defeating Eddie Guerrero and his third after edging out Juventud. He recovered from a knee injury that kept him out of the ring for six months and won his fourth Cruiserweight championship against Chris Jericho.

In 1999, Mysterio teamed up with Konnan in a tag team match against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Mysterio and his partner lost the «Hair vs Mask match», and this was terrible news to him. It meant that the world would see Rey Mysterio’s face for the first time. He has expressed his disappointment over being unmasked.

The Legacy/Future Of The Rey Mysterio Mask

Rey Mysterio still sports his mask while wrestling on SmackDown, but the lucha libre veteran might not be the last competitor to wear the very same iconic headwear.

Speaking on the Out of Character podcast in 2021, Dominik Mysterio noted that his long-term goal in wrestling is to earn either Rey Mysterio’s mask or the Rey Mysterio name.

Rey Mysterio has previously noted that he’d be open to passing his mask down to Dominik when he decides to step away from the ring for good.

Rey Mysterio WCW Unmasking

A luchador’s unmasking is a huge deal, with many stars refusing to publicly remove their mask for their entire career. In the case of El Santo, fans only got to see the wrestling legend’s face for the first time a week before the icon’s passing in February 1984.

While there are a number of photos floating around of Rey Mysterio without his mask, the most notable comes from a segment in which the luchador was forced to remove his mask in WCW.

At WCW Superbrawl IX in February 1999, Mysterio teamed with Konnan to face Kevin Nash & Scott Hall in a mask vs hair bout. Mysterio’s team ultimately lost, and per the stipulation, Mysterio had to unmask in the ring.

Mysterio went on to wrestle without a mask for the rest of his WCW career, before Vince McMahon requested for Mysterio to compete with his mask again after the luchador joined WWE.

Rey Mysterio became a star in the wrestling world

Nearly all WWE fans know Mysterio. Standing at 5-foot-6, reports WWE.com, the fearless competitor doesn’t let his size affect him one bit.

In 1989, a 14-year-old Mysterio — then known as Óscar Gutiérrez — began his professional career in Mexico. The young athlete learned freestyle wrestling form known as lucha libre. Mysterio made his World Championship Wrestling debut in 1996. That July, he won his first Cruiserweight Championship, which he retained for three months.

As Mysterio developed his wrestling career, he established his professional identity — always wearing a mask. Fans also recognized him for his acrobatic moves in the ring. In 2001, when World Championship Wrestling closed down, Mysterio wrestled independently.

Then, in July 2002, he made his WWE debut on an episode of SmackDown! Mysterio battled some of the top wrestlers in WWE, quickly becoming a fan favorite. He won his first WWE Cruiserweight Championship when he defeated Matt Hardy in 2003.

Mysterio formed a duo with former WWE star Eddie Guerrero in 2005. The two won a Tag Team Championship, later experiencing a short feud. When Guerrero died, Mysterio gave an emotional speech about his good friend Guerrero. During the speech, Mysterio took off his mask and put his head down so no one could see his face.

Перед турниром Hell in a Cell Рей объединился с Сином Карой.
