Stephen Moffat. Films according to his scripts

A series called Press Grand with successwas broadcast on screens from 1989 to 1993. Part of this particular project was Moffat. Stephen finished work on this TV project in the 90’s and on the wave of the first success began to think about the continuation of his television career. Producer of the TV show Bob Spears arranged a meeting with Steven with the television and André Plaschinski, who was going to start a new show. The Joking Apart series turned out to be quite self-ironical, because the script was largely borrowed from personal life (the matter is that during the Moffat series the controversy began in this respect). The story of her husband-writer, wife and lover of his wife was very warmly received by the public and even put forward on the Emmy.

In 1997, the creative tandem Moffat-Plaschinskireleases a new project — Chalk. But, unfortunately, the comedy story about high school students was closed by the channel. With the advent of 2000, the first series of the project «Love for Six» is released on the screens. This time the story turned out to be optimistic — it was based on relationships, or rather their beginning, with Sue Vert (his second wife), who also worked on television. Later, Stephen worked on the American version of the series, but the work did not get as popular as her British original.

World Recognition

One of the most important scenarios in his career was2004 — he was offered work on restarting the famous «Doctor Who» (later the fans especially liked the episode «Forest of the Dead»). Stephen Moffat — the only one who could do it worthy. He, of course, could not miss the chance to participate in the cult project, a fan of which was since childhood. Thanks to his talent, the screenwriter breathed a second life into the series, and the show blossomed with frenzied popularity, and Stephen received not one prestigious award. And it should also be noted that Moffat attached a «scenario hand» to the cartoon «The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn» (2011), directed by Steven Spielberg, along with Peter Jackson (director of The Lord of the Rings and the trilogy «The Hobbit»).

Once on a train

With the advent of 2010 there was an event, a hurricaneswept across the film world and swept everything in its path, the cause of which was Stephen Moffat — «Sherlock». The modern adaptation of classical works about Sherlock Holmes is more than a brave experiment, which not everyone will decide. And it turned out that the effort was not in vain — the show fell in love around the world, and the actors who played the main roles, have become one of the most popular and discussed people in the world. However, this could not have happened, if not for one trip on the train from Cardiff to London …

«Sherlock» is a product of joint painstakingwork of two writers: Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Both became friends while working on one of the episodes of Doctor Who. During the return from filming in London, sitting on the train, friends suddenly found out that both are great admirers of detective works of Conan Doyle. Speaking on this topic, Steven and Mark came to the mutual desire to move the Victorian Sherlock Holmes these days. What would he be then? If the classic Holmes smokes a pipe and wears a hunting hat, the modern one, most likely, would wear a nicotine patch and use a laptop and a smartphone. And Watson, who originally wrote stories about adventures, would now start a blog and call the detective not Mr. Holmes, but Sherlock. And so on…

The writers were so carried away by this idea thatwondered: why has it never occurred to anyone? And since no one did this, they should do it — Gettys and Moffat. Stephen talked about this conversation to his wife, who also became imbued with the idea and subsequently became the producer of the series. Perhaps, we should not talk about his frenzied popularity. We only note that the creators did not count on such success. What was a free fantasy, became a general agiotage from season to season. And besides, Moffat Stephen promised that the fourth season of «Sherlock» will be the most unexpected and dramatic, which further heated the expectation of the public. Chalk and Coupling

Between marriages, Moffat claims that he «shagged way round television studios like a mechanical digger.» According to an interview with The New York Times, Moffat met television producer Sue Vertue at the Edinburgh Television Festival in 1996. Vertue had been working for Tiger Aspect, a production company run by Peter Bennett-Jones. Bennett-Jones and his friend and former colleague Andre Ptaszynski, who had worked with Moffat on Joking Apart, told Moffat and Vertue that each fancied the other. A relationship blossomed and they left their respective production companies to join Hartswood Films, run by Beryl Vertue, Sue’s mother. The couple have two children together: Joshua and Louis.

Before Moffat left Pola Jones for Hartswood, Ptaszynski produced Chalk, the series that the writer had pitched to him at the beginning of the decade. Set in a comprehensive school and starring David Bamber as manic deputy head Eric Slatt and Nicola Walker as Suzy Travis, the show was based on Moffat’s three years as an English teacher. The studio audience responded so positively to the first series when it was taped that the BBC commissioned a second series before the first had aired. However, it was met less enthusiastically by critics upon transmission in February 1997, who had taken exception to the BBC’s publicity department comparing the show to the highly respected Fawlty Towers. In an interview in the early 2000s, Moffat refuses to even name the series, joking that he might get attacked in the street.

After production wrapped on Chalk in 1997, Moffat announced to the cast that he was marrying Vertue. When she eventually asked him for a sitcom, he decided to base it around the evolution of their own relationship. Coupling was first broadcast on BBC2 in 2000, with his wife producing for Hartswood Films. The series proved to be highly successful, running until 2004 and producing four series and twenty-eight episodes, all written by Moffat. He also wrote the original, unbroadcast pilot episode for the U.S. version, also titled Coupling, although this was less successful and was cancelled after four episodes on the NBC network. Moffat has blamed its failure on an unprecedented level of network interference.

World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls (Series 10, Episodes 11 & 12, 2017)

You may have noticed in other ranking articles that Den of Geek is rather fond of this story. There’s a legitimate criticism here that, compared with the finales of his predecessor, that Moffat’s are inward-looking, critiquing and playing with the tropes of Doctor Who rather than blockbuster, tell-your-friends, watercooler-moment television. However it’s arguable that this is far from a negative quality. In his first series, Moffat blew up the entire universe. There wasn’t really anywhere to go from there, and so the stakes get more personal: the focus is on the Doctor’s death, Amy and Rory’s departure, and the Doctor’s identity leading into the reveal of the War Doctor. When the universe is at stake or the Earth threatened, it’s with the Doctor defending it from a small town or because the Master is offering a warped kind of friendship. Then we get the Doctor trying to avert Clara’s death and finally him, Bill and Nardole trying to save a small number of survivors from the oncoming Cybermen. The backdrop might be one of famous characters and monsters, but the stakes are not saving a planet, or a universe. That’s fine. Indeed, Russell T. Davies considered it for David Tennant’s regeneration story, but abandoned it when given two specials to fill instead.

You may also have noticed that we often rank ‘Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways’ highly too. Both stories have a sense of completeness for their Doctors, a sense that this is their logical conclusion. For the Ninth it’s having their morality be rewarded, as it influences Rose to save him and means he doesn’t have to commit a double genocide again. For Capaldi’s Doctor, who has been loudly struggling with the idea of being a good man – the Doctor of repute rather than a scared idiot – the fact that he finally drops any pretence or front means a lot. There’s no abrasive quipping, no ends justifying the means, just him and Bill facing almost certain death to hopefully buy some time for a small number of people with the knowledge that his appeal to his best friend hasn’t worked. No one else knows this is happening. 

The scale is perfectly pitched and resolves the character arc in an incredibly satisfying way – Missy and an army of Cybermen hark back to the Series 8 finale, but instead of Danny Pink taking the hit to save the day it’s the Doctor doing it. The Cybermen aren’t something the Doctor can reason with, they’re a threat that needs nullified. Unlike ‘Closing Time’, few people complain about “blowing them up with love” in this episode.

A Christmas Carol (Christmas Special, 2010)

It’s the best Christmas special isn’t it? Romantic and melancholy and resonant with its “halfway out of the dark” motif. It manages to include flying sharks into a riff on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – with your actual Michael Gambon as Scrooge – without it seeming a bit much. While Moffat’s cleverness is ostentatious and this can wind people up the wrong way, let’s look at something he said on the ‘City of Death’ DVD extras: “Douglas Adams brought to Doctor Who something completely useless. He brought the revelation of what Doctor Who would look like if it was written by a genius. Well, there just aren’t too many geniuses, so I don’t know that there’s much to learn from the way he did it.”

The thing is, Moffat and Russell T. Davies also demonstrated what Doctor Who would look like if written by a genius: a fricking flying shark in a Dickens adaptation. Doctor Who can do that, almost no other show can, and so frankly Doctor Who should be colliding ideas together like this as often as it can. Moffat has spoken of the show using up ideas at a tremendous rate, and certainly he seems to fritter away concepts that could power a story on a grace note or background detail, or set up one idea only to veer away from it when another one takes over. Yes, every single character he writes is hornier than a teenage unicorn, and yes, you can spend every single episode he writes waiting tensely for sex comedy that would have got written out of the second draft of a Carry On film, but nonetheless we have been spoiled by this double whammy of geniuses running the show, and if there is anything to learn it is that. 

Studies and first successes

It all started with the Scottish city of Paisley. It was here on November 18, 1961 Moffat was born. Stephen (his full name Stephen William Moffat) spent his childhood in this town and graduated from high school, and then enrolled at the University of Glasgow (studied at the Faculty of Philology) and even became a bachelor in English. After graduating from university, he got a job as a school teacher. It was during his time at school that he first sat down to write the play War Zones and the musical Knifer, which successfully survived the production of the school theater.

After some time in the school administrationreceived an appeal from the television producers to assist in the creation of the series about the school newspaper. It so happened that the person to whom they applied was Stephen’s father. Knowing about my son’s hobby to write good texts, he advised me to address him. Producers were very pleased with what Stephen had suggested in the script, and Moffat Jr. made his first successful move in the television career.
