The group was particularly successful in Europe , particularly in the Netherlands, Germany , Switzerland , Great Britain and Spain . With boom, boom, boom, boom !! , We’re Going to Ibiza and We Like to Party! (The Vengabus) they achieved number one hits. All appearances were without a band and with full playback . In mid-2001, after seven top 10 hits, the Vengaboys retreated back into the club scene .

On February 9, 2004 all current and previous members gave a farewell concert. Since 2006, three of the previous members (Kim, Denise, Yorick) and one new member (Todd Eastwood) appear again in different countries. In 2008 they were booked for several festivals and club appearances. Since the live singing is still only reduced to heating up the audience, the Vengaboys still only perform with full playback of their old hits. A comeback was scheduled for 2008, but only happened in May / June 2010. On November 14th, 2009 the Vengaboys performed at the seven-hour concert «We love the 90’s — Part 2» in the König-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen. The Vengaboys have been back since June 2010. Her single Rocket to Uranus entered the Dutch charts at number 7 in July. Yorick Bakker was replaced in 2009 by former member Robin Pors; the background to this is not known. The video was shot entirely in 3D in the USA with Internet blogger Perez Hilton .

Hot Hot Hot , a cover version of a 1983 Arrow hit , was released in July 2013. In May 2014, on the occasion of the soccer World Cup in Brazil, a remix of their single To Brazil! under the title 2 Brazil! . A music video published for this caused criticism due to the almost three-minute-long depiction of breasts sparsely clad with pasties .

In a Six Flags advertising campaign, an elderly man (Mr. Six) dances to We Like to Party and drives residents down a street to an amusement park.

In the course of the Ibiza affair in 2019 around the then Austrian Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache ( FPÖ ), the song We’re Going to Ibiza in Austria experienced a new surge in popularity. It was played as an unofficial protest song at demonstrations against the Austrian government with FPÖ participation. The impetus was given by Jan Böhmermann , who shared the music video for the song on Twitter exactly at the time the scandal was made public. As a result, the song reached number 16 in the Austrian charts and number 1 in the Austrian iTunes charts. On May 30, 2019, the Vengaboys performed in front of several thousand people on the Ballhausplatz in Vienna as part of the Thursday demonstration .

Private

In 2004 Denise van Rijswijk married the Dutch actor Winston Post. They had a son in 2005 and a daughter in 2015. In 2013 Kim Sasabone became the mother of a daughter.

Band history

The Vengaboys are a project by the two Dutch DJs Danski (Dennis van den Driesschen) and Delmundo (Wessel van Diepen). Wessel van Diepen is a well-known radio DJ in the Netherlands who prefers to remain anonymous. Van Diepen had other projects in the works. In 1991 he landed a big hit with James Brown is dead from L.A. Style . In 1994 he worked with «Lick Ft. Kentucky» and was involved in the song Children of the Night by Nakatomi .

The idea of ​​the Vengaboys arose when van Diepen toured Spain with the school bus from 1992 to 1997. In summer he set up his equipment on various beaches in Spain and organized illegal beach parties. The parties ended with the Guardia Civil intervening. Both promoters and producers Danski and Delmundo had underground party hits in 1996 and 1997. They also produced the E-Motion project.

In 1996 Kim Sasabone was recruited as the front and Rachael Carpenter and Olivia Ovington as the background singers for Vengaboys music videos. With Parada de tettas and To Brazil! get first placements in the Dutch charts. In 1998 and with the first international success Up & Down , the Vengaboys were formed as a quartet with Kim Sasabone, Denise van Rijswijk, Roy den Burger and Robin Pors.

1999 with boom, boom, boom, boom !! a specific outfit of their group members became formative for the band. The front singer Kim Sasabone always appears in a sexy battle outfit . Roy the Burger and his successor Donny Latupeirissa are dressed as cowboys. Denise van Rijswijk wears a doll outfit and Robin Pors (now Yorick Bakker) can always be seen as a sailor.

• Kim Sasabone (1997–2002, 2006–present) — The lead vocalist of Vengaboys, Kim was the founding member.
• Denise Post-Van Rijswijk (1997–2002, 2006–present) — Joined Kim with Roy and Robin in 1997. When the group disbanded in 2002 she gave birth to her first child.
• Roy den Burger (1997–2002) — Joined Kim with Denise and Robin in 1997. Roy was the original cowboy and was later replaced by Donny.

Brief Biography

The Vengaboys project was created by Danski and DJ Delmundo, two Dutch producer DJ’s who toured Spain and Ibiza in a bus between 1992 and 1997, bringing «provocative grooves and sexy lyrics» to beaches for impromptu and illegal dance and beach parties. During 1995-96, four dancers/singers (Roy, Denice, Kim and Robin) — who had been regular guests at the beach parties — were added and the enlarged troupe toured beaches throughout Europe. Initially the new foursome worked as dancers to ‘spice up’ the DJ sets.

The name «Vengaboys» was originally used by Danski and DJ Delmundo as an alias name for themselves, and the young dancers and models who would headline the project as its «members» joined the project much later. Hence why the Venga»boys» are not all boys, but also two women. The lead vocals of Vengaboys’ songs is provided by Dutch singer Jane Talany, although she remains uncredited on most releases, except for the American edition of «The Platinum Album» where she is credited as vocalist. This was common for eurodance acts during the 90s which often used uncredited studio vocalists for their releases.

The act’s first single «Up & Down» was released in March 1997 in selected countries (Germany, France, Italy, Scandinavia and Israel), becoming a huge success in Europe (e.g. making the top 5 in The Netherlands, Denmark, France and Spain), before making its way over to America. The UK really caught the ‘Venga bug’, with combined sales of the act’s first 4 singles — «Boom Boom Boom Boom» (reached #1); «We’re Going To Ibiza» (#1); «Up & Down» (#3) and «We Like To Party» making nearly 2 Million. «We Like to Party!» is used in a Six Flags ad campaign featuring an old man dancing to the tune and picking up passengers. With global sales of over 10 Million singles, and 5 Million copies of their first album, Vengaboys have proved to be the most commercially successful Dutch group in history.

One of the band’s particularities was that they were always wearing a special outfit. The front lady Kim Sasabone (April 1st 1974 from Salvador) always appeared wearing a sexy camouflage outfit. Roy Olivero-Den Burger (aka Roy Darman, born 31 July 1975, coming from Trinidad), then later his replacement Donny Latupeirissa, were dressed as a cowboy. Denise Van Rijswijk (born October 20th 1978, dancer from the Netherlands) wore a disco outfit. Robin Pors (born January 1st 1978) then Yorick Bakker (born July 10th 1976) played the role of a sailor.

X-Mas Party Album

In January 2014, Robin Pors said in an interview in Dubai that the group intended to continue touring in Europe and that they were working on future shows in the Middle East and India, along with performing their greatest hits, their latest single, «Hot, Hot, Hot», and reportedly new unreleased tracks. He also stated that releasing new material was planned for 2014. In May 2014 a new remix from their single «To Brazil» re-titled «2 Brazil» was released. In November 2014 a new album was released called The X-mas Party Album including all the Vengaboys hits with a Christmas sound. Also, the single «Where Did My X-mas Tree Go» was released together with a new music video. A tour of South Africa was scheduled for December.

2020–2023: Covers, remixes and tour

In the summer of 2020, the band released a festival version of their worldwide hit «Up & Down» with Australian DJ and producer Timmy Trumpet, with the new version credited to Timmy Trumpet x Vengaboys.

In September 2021, the band released a cover version of «1999», Charli XCX’s Top 20 UK hit with Troye Sivan, which was retitled «1999 (I Wanna Go Back)» and came with a deep fake-style video which saw the cover stars from various 1990s albums lip-syncing to the song and the band put into the Friends title sequence with the sofa and fountain.

September 20, 2021, also marked the Vengaboys’ first live performance since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, taking part in 90’s Nostalgia: Electric Circus, a Canadian tour featuring Eurodance music. In 2023, they toured Australia and New Zealand, performing at Sydney World Pride in late February 2023.

Continued Success

Never critically acclaimed, the group continued making records that were distinctly eurodance (the music video of «Kiss» even features one of the dancers from ParaParaAllstars performing a Para Para dance), following in the footsteps of previous Dutch-Dance sensations 2 Unlimited. The ploy worked and by the beginning of the year 2000, the group had achieved four top 10 entries, including two number-one hits («Boom Boom Boom Boom» and «We’re Going to Ibiza»).

The group’s success continued throughout the beginning of the 21st century, with the «The Platinum Album » (their second album release) selling over 1,000,000 copies, spawning three big hits «Kiss (When the Sun…)», «Shala Lala» and «Uncle John From Jamaica») and two lesser-known tracks , «Cheekah Bow-Bow», which included their fifth cyber-member Cheekah, and the ballad «Forever As One», which gained more notoriety for its video, which was banned after the group used unlicensed pictures of them meeting pop group Westlife. By mid-2001, after nearly ten top 10 hits, the group partly disbanded and went back to working on the club scene.
