Rob and Fab vs. The Real Milli Vanilli
Days after Farian’s press conference, Rob and Fab called their own. They were joined by a voice coach who assured the audience that, yes, they could sing. Rob and Fab then gave back their Grammys, which they’d planned on doing even before the Recording Academy formally revoked the awards.

The fallout was devastating for Rob and Fab. They released a self-titled comeback album in 1993 and even appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show to sing for real in front of a national audience. But Rob & Fab flopped, and the two former idols wrestled with drug addiction.
Fab ultimately sobered up, but Rob spiraled out of control. In 1996 he served jail time for assaulting two people and breaking into a car, and in 1998, he died of a drug overdose in a Frankfurt hotel room. He was 33 years old.
At the time of his death, Rob had apparently been working with Farian again. “I’m totally shocked,” the producer told the Independent upon learning of Rob’s death. “Rob looked really good again. He was full of optimism for the future. We intended to tape material for another album.”
Fab wasn’t involved in that project, but he has revisited Milli Vanilli’s past in his own way. In yet another bizarre twist to this story, Fab teamed up with John Davis, one of the real singers whose voice he’d once lip-synced to, for the project Face Meets Voice: A Milli Vanilli Experience. The emergence of that unlikely duo might make for a good ending to the Milli Vanilli movie that’s been in the works since 2007. Filming was all set to begin on the project when director Brett Ratner lost his co-financing deal with Warner Bros. amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Back in their heyday, Milli Vanilli claimed the band’s name meant “positive energy” in Turkish. That wasn’t true: The moniker was partially inspired by the English pop group Scritti Politti. But Fab has maintained a remarkably upbeat attitude as he has gotten older. In addition to making music, he’s branched off into motivational speaking, using his story as an example of how one can “not just survive but thrive” after adversity. He’s certainly made peace with his own legacy. Speaking with the Associated Press in 2018, he defended his and Rob’s contributions to pop culture some two decades earlier.
“People might say, ‘Well, you know, they didn’t sing on the record,’” Fab said. “But look at the rest. We were the heart and soul of Milli Vanilli. We did those 107 cities (on tour) … in eight months. We worked hard. We worked our butts off. We entertained people.”

The Big Lie is Born
What happened next is the most crucial and contested part of the story. Farian invited Rob and Fab to his studio and signed the duo to a record deal. That much is known. The question is whether Rob and Fab knew what they were getting into.

“We walked into a trap, not knowing it was a trap,” Fab told VLADTV. In his version of events, he and Rob signed the contract without realizing they were being hired purely to lip-sync. They wanted to sing, and the first time Farian played them “Girl You Know It’s True”—the song that would become their international breakthrough—he presented the track as an instrumental. Little did they know Farian had already recorded vocals with professional singers.
By the time they learned the truth, Fab said, they had already spent Farian’s advance money on new clothes and their trademark hair extensions. They were suddenly in debt to Farian, and they couldn’t walk away from the project until they paid him back. Once the group took off, and girls and drugs and money came into the picture, it became even harder for Rob and Fab to break away.
Farian claimed that Rob and Fab were never going to be proper recording artists. “I’ve never heard such a bad singer,” Farian said of Rob in a Los Angeles Times interview “They wanted to sing. They wanted to write songs. It never happened. They went instead to discos ’til 4 a.m. and slept all day. All they ever really did was party. Someone who lives like that can’t make good music.”
How Did Rob Pilatus Die?
Following the scandal, Rob Pilatus took some time away from his “singing” partner, Fabrice Morvan. However, the two briefly reunited, first for a Carefree Sugarless Chewing Gum commercial and then in 1992 when they signed with a new label, Taj, and released an album titled ‘Rob & Fab.’ Unfortunately, this effort did not gain much traction, and the label eventually went bankrupt.
Rob Pilatus faced personal challenges during this time, struggling with substance abuse issues. In 1996, he was arrested and spent three months in prison for charges including assault, vandalism, and attempted robbery. Subsequently, Frank Farian, who had initially created the duo, sent him to a drug rehabilitation center, where he spent six months before returning to Germany.
In April 1998, it appeared that the duo was planning a promotional tour for a new Milli Vanilli album titled ‘Back and in Attack.’ However, a day before the tour could commence, Rob Pilatus, 33, was found dead in a hotel room near Frankfurt on April 3, 1998. The autopsy report confirmed his death as accidental. Rob Pilatus is buried in the Munich Waldfriedhof cemetery, and the album ‘Back and in Attack’ was never released.

In 2004, Jodie accepted the position of Call Center Supervisor and later became the Marketing Manager at Genesis Entertainment, Inc. in Las Vegas. She also hosted two weekly radio shows focusing on entertainment and nightlife on Highway Radio. Jodie dedicated her time to volunteering alongside Nevada Wild Fest and Highway Radio, supporting The Lili Claire Foundation for over four years, and making significant donations.
Furthermore, Jodie volunteered as a Catechist for nine years, offering her service both in Northern California and in Las Vegas. Her contributions did not go unnoticed, as she was recognized for her achievements. In 2014, Jodie was voted one of Las Vegas’ Top 100 Women of Influence, and in 2017, she received the Women’s Chamber of Commerce Nevada Entertainer of the Year Award. Later developments
In 2000, Fab Morvan was featured in a BBC documentary on Milli Vanilli. He was also featured in the premiere episode of VH1 Behind the Music. On February 14, 2007, it was announced that Universal Pictures was developing a film based on the story of Milli Vanilli’s rise and fall in the music industry. Jeff Nathanson, screenwriter from Catch Me If You Can, Producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall and Producer Executive Adam Yoelin were supposed to write and direct the film while Fab Morvan serves as a consultant. However, in February 2011, it was announced that Milli Vanilli movie will be rewritten and directed by Florian Gallenberger.
Controversy and episode edits[edit]
Despite their popularity, Milli Vanilli attracted suspicions of lip syncing during their shows, rumors that were exacerbated by Morvan and Pilatus’ thick German speaking accents (compared to their American-sounding singing voices) and a notorious live performance where a guide vocal locked up mid-song, only two weeks after the initial airing of «Kootie Pie Rocks», and one week after the group won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In November 1990, producer Frank Farian revealed that not only was this true, but the pair also never recorded a single note on their studio recordings. In actuality, the vocals were performed by four different singers — Brad Howell, John Davis, Jodie Rocco, and Linda Rocco — who Farian saw as unmarketable. Morvan and Pilatus relinquished their Grammy in light of the confession, with conflicting accounts stating that they either returned it voluntarily or had it revoked. The band’s US label, Arista Records, additionally pulled their catalog from print and erased the master tapes that they possessed.
In the wake of the scandal, subsequent airings of «Kootie Pie Rocks» cut their songs and replaced them with different instrumental music (the pair still move their lips while performing these songs in the re-releases, however, as the episodes were not reanimated to reflect the change), as well as cutting any references to Milli Vanilli throughout the episode. Milli Vanilli’s song at the end of the episode was completely cut, without even an instrumental replacement.
Beginnings
When Frank Farian developed the concept of Milli Vanilli, he chose to feature vocals by Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and twin sisters Jodie and Linda Rocco; however, he felt that those singers lacked a marketable image. He then recruited Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, two younger model/dancers he found dancing in a Munich dance club, to front the act. Milli Vanilli’s debut album All or Nothing was released in Europe in mid-1988, with Rob and Fab’s pictures on the front and center of the albums, but no mention of who actually sang the songs. The success of the record caught the attention of Arista Records who signed the duo. Arista deleted several tracks from the original album, added several new ones (including a new track written by Diane Warren, «Blame It on the Rain»), remixed many of the tracks and renamed the album to Girl You Know It’s True for release in the American market in early 1989.
This version of the album went six times platinum and led to the re-release of the title track, which peaked at number 2 on the Hot 100 in April of that year and was certified platinum. (The song was a cover version of a Numarx track published in 1987 on the US Bluebird label.) The U.K. release featured the original first album and the remix album together as «2 X 2». Even greater commercial success followed, as the pair’s next three singles «Baby Don’t Forget My Number», «Girl I’m Gonna Miss You» and «Blame It on the Rain» all reached number 1. A fifth and final single «All or Nothing», also made the Top 5 in the beginning of 1990 in a remixed form which sampled the «Keep On Movin'» beat from UK soul act Soul II Soul. Milli Vanilli’s meteoric rise to pop music superstardom culminated with a Grammy Award for Best New Artist on February 22, 1990.
How Did John Davis Die?

Davis, one of the original vocalists associated with Milli Vanilli, revealed that when he initially started working with Frank Farian, he was unaware that his singing would be attributed to other individuals. On a podcast, he , “The truth is, I signed a contract with Frank Farian before I even knew who Milli Vanilli was. One evening, I was sitting at home watching my TV, and I saw Fab singing ‘Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.’”
He also became a part of “The Real Milli Vanilli” band and played a role in the release of their album ‘The Moment of Truth’ in 1991. Over the years, Davis was able to establish an amicable relationship with Fabrice Morvan and they even performed together. However, in May 2022, Davis fell victim to the health effects of COVID-19, leading to his passing. His was met with mourning from the entire music universe, and he continues to live on through his songs and contributions to the music industry.
