Annie Potts’ Story of Success
Born in Nashville, Annie grew up in Franklin and graduated in 1970 from Franklin-Simpson High School. She always dreamt of being an actress and so earned her bachelor’s degree in theatre at Stephens College, Columbia.
Potts had her break on the big screen in 1978 with the comedy movie Corvette Summer. She had then appeared in one of the best Hollywood movies like Ghostbusters, Heartaches, Pretty in Pink, etc.
Another CBS sitcom that Potts is very well known for is Designing Women, which ran for a long time and earned a lot of public love. In addition, her work in Murder in Manhattan, The Music Teacher, and GCB are a few names that got her even more popularity.
While Annie is famous worldwide for her acting skills, she is also known for something more. She has voiced the character Bo Peep in the Toy Story Franchise. Not just that, Potts has worked on Audio books too.
Annie debuted on Broadway with God of Carnage in 2009 and debuted in Broadway Musical with Pippin in 2013. All of her milestones are still appreciated by her fans, and her hard work has earned her immense respect across the industry.
Most recently, Annie Potts was seen playing the role of Meemaw in the hit CBS comedy show Young Sheldon. Her glory as a comedy actress keeps growing with each passing year.
Career
Annie Potts made her debut on the big screen in 1978 in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer comedy film Corvette Summer, with Mark Hamill. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1979 for her role in the film. In 1982, she won Genie Awards for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress for her role in the film Heartaches, about a young woman married to a stock car racer and carrying his friend’s child.
Potts played Edith Bedelmeyer in 1980, a woman who shared an attic apartment with three other women (played by Georgia Engel, Lorna Patterson, and Francine Tacker) on the short-lived comedy series, Goodtime Girls.

She played receptionist Janine Melnitz in the Ghostbusters film series; being from Tennessee, Potts created the character’s trademark New York accent based on a friend who was from the city. She then achieved fame as pragmatic interior designer Mary Jo Shively on the CBS television sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993) and has had a wide variety of prominent roles in both television and film.
Annie Potts was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1994 for her role as Dana Palladino on Love & War (1993–1995). Other notable roles include Mary Elizabeth (O’Brien) Sims on the Lifetime Television drama series Any Day Now (1998–2002), for which she was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
Potts appeared in the voice of Bo Peep in three of the Toy Story films, a supporting role in John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink, and guest-starring roles on such CBS television series as Magnum, P.I., Joan of Arcadia, Close to Home, Two and a Half Men, and ABC’s Men in Trees, Ugly Betty, and Boston Legal. She played a recurring role as Sophie Devere in the NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2005 to 2009.
She has done work on audiobooks; including as the narrator and heroine of Larry McMurtry’s Telegraph Days, winning the 2007 Audie Award for Solo Narration-Female, for her portrayal. Annie Potts starred in the film version of McMurtry’s Texasville, a sequel to The Last Picture Show. She made her Broadway debut upon joining the cast of the Tony Award-winning plays God of Carnage on November 17, 2009, succeeding Hope Davis in the role.
In 2012, Potts starred as Elizabeth “Gigi” Stopper in ABC’s comedy-drama series GCB, with Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, and Marisol Nichols. She says she based her portrayal of the character on Dixie Carter, adding, “Were she still alive, the role would have been hers and should have been.”
Annie Potts also played a leading role in the 2012 Hallmark Channel original musical movie The Music Teacher, about a high-school music teacher who is on the brink of losing her beloved school music program because of district budget cuts. In an effort to spare the program, Daley’s former students band together to stage a musical to raise money to keep the program alive.
Potts signed on for the lead role of the ABC comedy-drama pilot Murder in Manhattan in March 2013 about a mother and daughter who team up as amateur sleuths. ABC later looked for a cable network to distribute the series, opting not to air it on network television. In late 2013, it was announced that Potts would join Diane Paulus’ critically acclaimed revival of Pippin beginning January 21, 2014.

Annie Potts has been married four times and has been divorced thrice. Currently, her husband is James Hayman. James is a successful director and producer. They got married on 02 Sep 1990 and together they have two children.
At first, she married Steven Douglas Schwartz on 26 Aug 1973. Then, they divorced after 5 years in 1978. Potts and her Steven Hartley were once in a car accident.
The accident left several bones below her waist broken, including compound fractures to both legs and the loss of the heel of her right foot. Also, Hartley lost his left leg. They two were on their Volkswagen bus and got hit by 2 drivers who were drag racing.
Then she tied the knot with TV actor Greg Antonacci on 21 June 1978. This marriage lasted only for two years and they left each other in 1980. Her third husband was an assistant director, B. Scott Senechal.
Their wedding was on 28 Feb 1981. Together, they had a child Clay Samuel Senechal (born in 1981). Again they got separated in 1981.
Potts is the proud mother of three sons: Clay (with third husband Scott Senechal), and two with James Hayman: James (called Doc, born in 1992), and Harry (born in 1996).
