Chicago Bulls

With his wide wingspan and seemingly unmatched ability to defend, score and rebound at will, Pippen was a favorite among NBA scouts. In the 1987 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics selected the forward with the fifth overall pick. Just a few weeks later, Pippen was traded to the Chicago Bulls for eventual journeyman Olden Polynice and a draft pick, to team up with Michael Jordan and a crew of other young players.

Following a modest rookie year, Pippen blossomed during the 1988-89 season — his first as a starter — helping turn a struggling Bulls club into a playoff contender.

In the spring of 1991, Pippen and Jordan led the Bulls to the first of three consecutive NBA titles, defeating Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Over the next seven seasons, the Bulls continued to win, capturing six NBA titles in all. While Jordan was the face of the team’s success, Pippen, with his versatility as a scorer and defensive player, was nearly as vital to the club’s run.

Favorite Quotes From Scottie Pippen

“I know sometimes I need to be more like M.J., but M.J. also needs to be more like me. He needs to be the player he is with more my mentality.” – Scottie Pippen

“Michael Jordan is probably the greatest scorer to ever play in the game. But I may go as far to say Lebron James may be the greatest player to ever play the game.” – Scottie Pippen

“It’s going to be great. A lot of the players are coming. I wasn’t here when they put (Jackson) up in the rafters. But to have him here as my number goes up, it brings back a lot of great memories.” – Scottie Pippen

“He’s very knowledgeable. That’s the one advantage that I see in Kobe Bryant’s career compared to Michael Jordan. Ten years into Kobe Bryant’s career, we’re seeing a very polished 27-year-old player who’s probably got another seven or eight great years ahead of him.” – Scottie Pippen

“It’s hard to put it in perspective right now. I’m starting to feel a little emotional about what’s going to happen Friday night. Getting your number put in the rafters is always something that as a kid … you dream of seeing happen to you.” – Scottie Pippen

How many rings did he win with Michael Jordan?

Possibly one of the most well-known basketball duos during the 1990s was between Jordan and Pippen while playing for the Bulls. From the 1991 to 1993 seasons and the 1996 through 1998 seasons, Pippen won a total of seven NBA championships while playing with Jordan, who is considered by most to be the greatest basketball player in history. In addition, Pippen won seven NBA All-Star awards in 1990 and from 1992 until 1997.

During the 1992 and 1996 championship games, Pippen was one of the main players during the match. He won his only MVP award after Jordan left the team in 1994, although he did not win another championships until Jordan returned two years later. The pair, however, do not have a friendly relationship and have strayed apart in recent years. Following the release of Jordan’s 2020 docuseries «The Last Dance,» which detailed the rise of the Bulls all-star team 1990s, Pippen issued a statement criticizing the film.

«They glorified Michael Jordan while not giving nearly enough praise to me and my proud teammates,» Pippen wrote in his 2021 memoir «Unguarded.» «Michael deserved a large portion of the blame. The producers had granted him editorial control of the final product. The doc couldn’t have been released otherwise. He was the leading man and the director.»

Career

Klay Thompson started his career, like Marcus Trufant, at Washington State University, making the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team his first year.

As a sophomore, he led the Cougars to the Great Alaska Shootout Championship and was named its Most Outstanding Player.

That year, he also became the third-fastest Cougar to reach 1,000 points, earning him Pac-10 Player of the Week honors twice in a row.

When he was a junior, he became the third player in Cougar history to win first-team all-district honors twice during his career.

After recording 43 points during the 2011 Pac-10 Tournament, he declared himself for the 2011 NBA Draft to begin his professional career.

His Early Years

Klay Thompson was selected 11th overall by the Golden State Warriors, the same team that helped make Kevin Durant so wealthy.

His first season with the team saw his skills improve exponentially, and he was voted to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

In 2013, head coach Mark Jackson said that Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry made the best shooting duo in NBA history.

Curry and Thompson combined made 483 three-pointers, the most ever scored by an NBA duo at that time.

Thompson signed a four-year contract extension with the Warriors in 2014, and the next day, scored a career-high 41 points.

Shortly after, he set an NBA record by scoring 37 points in a single quarter, also a league record at the time.

By the end of the season, with Thompson’s help, the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Championships for the first time in 40 years.

Nothing But Net

Thompson opened the first six games of the 2016 season and became the first Warrior to score 60 points since Rick Barry in 1974.

Aside from that, Thompson also helped the Warriors win their second championship in three years, becoming the first in history to start the playoffs 12-0.

His winning streak extended to the 2017 season when the Warriors went on to sweep the series, earning a third NBA Championship title.

In 2018, he hit the NBA record of 14 threes, breaking Curry’s former record of 13, and he was named to the NBA All-Defensive team for the first time.

Unfortunately, after enjoying consecutive successful seasons, at the end of 2018, he suffered from a torn ACL that sidelined him.

Due to losing such a star player, the Golden State Warriors went on to lose the series in a 114-110 defeat to the Toronto Raptors.

While many of the highest-paid athletes in the world have dealt with game-ending injuries, it was certainly a blow to Thompson.

Injuries And Comebacks

Klay Thompson opted to stay with the Golden State Warriors in 2019, signing a five-year contract for $190 million.

The next day, he underwent surgery on his ACL, though recovery forced him to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season.

While he returned to practice in September 2020, it was announced in November that he would miss the upcoming season due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Shortly after, Thompson was assigned to the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s NBA G League affiliate, for rehab.

Despite missing two seasons, Klay Thompson made his comeback in January 2022 in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In Game 3 of the playoffs, he scored 26 points and passed Hall of Famer Ray Allen for third on the NBA playoffs all-time three-pointers list.

Making his comeback even sweeter was that, shortly after, he passed LeBron James for second on the NBA Finals all-time three-pointers list as well.

Thanks to Thompson’s return on the court, the Golden State Warriors went on to win another NBA Championship, the fourth of his career.

No Sign Of Stopping

At the start of 2023, Thompson became the only player in NBA history to record multiple games with over 12 three-pointers in a season.

In April, at the end of the 2022-23 season, he made his 300th three-pointer in a runaway victory against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Entering the 2023-24 season, he started off strong, nailing five three-pointers during a 106-95 win against the Houston Rockets.

However, during a game in November, he was involved in a brawl on the court with Timberwolves center Jaden McDaniels, which spiraled out of control.

Both players, along with Draymond Green, who put Rudy Gobert in a headlock, were fined $25k each for their part in the altercation.

Despite this hiccup, in December, Thompson made NBA history again, earning 14,455 career points total, putting him ahead of Rod Strickland on the All-Time Scoring list.

Although he has been playing for over a decade, it’s obvious that Klay Thompson hasn’t lost a bit of the skill that’s helped make him successful.

While he could retire now and enjoy his wealth, so far, he has made no mention of stepping away from the court any time soon!

Scotty Pippen Jr. NBA Draft scouting report

High school

Pippen attended Sierra Canyon HS in Chatsworth, Calif. where he played alongside Kenyon Martin Jr. and Cassius Stanley.

As a senior, Pippen was graded as a four-star recruit by ESPN, choosing Vanderbilt over scholarship offers from San Francisco, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara and Washington State.

College

As a freshman during the 2019-20 season, Pippen hit the ground running, earning SEC All-Freshman honors with 12.0 points and 3.6 assists over 32 games, but the Commodores went 11-21 on the season.

While the COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted the 2020-21 season, Pippen stepped up his game, boosting his averages to 20.8 points and 4.9 assists over 22 games, good for First Team All-SEC honors, but Vanderbilt again struggled with a 9-16 record.

This past season, Pippen again earned All-SEC First Team selection, leading Vandy to a 19-17 record with averages of 20.4 points, 4.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. His scoring led the SEC and ranked 14th in all of NCAA Division I.

Comparing Scotty Pippen Jr. to Scottie Pippen in college

The paths of the two could not be much different.

Scottie Pippen began his college career as a 6-foot-1 walk-on at NAIA Central Arkansas, while Scotty Pippen Jr. earned a scholarship to Vanderbilt, a high-major Division I program.

The elder Pippen sprouted to 6-foot-8 while in college, allowing him to blossom into one of the nation’s best players with averages of  23.6 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a senior, resulting in his being selected fifth overall in the 1987 NBA Draft.

Scotty Pippen Jr. entered — and leaves — college standing at 6-foot-1, impacting his rebounding numbers, but his assists and steals figures suggest he and his father share a few instincts.

NBA

Pippen was one of the players invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. Here is how he measured out:

  • Height (w/ shoes): 6’1.5″
  • Weight: 180.0 lbs.
  • Body fat: 5.3 percent
  • Hand dimensions length, width: 9.0 inches, 7.75 inches
  • Standing reach: 8’10
  • Wingspan: 7’1.25″

At the combine, Pippen impressed in the scrimmages, displaying his ability to score at multiple levels and make high-effort plays on the defensive end.

Pippen was not listed on SN’s mock draft or top-60 big board. Although he went undrafted, he could prove to be a steal for the Lakers.

Early Years and College Career

Hall of Fame NBA forward Scottie Maurice Pippen was born on September 25, 1965, in Hamburg, Arkansas. The youngest of Preston and Ethel Pippen’s 12 children, Pippen played both football and basketball as a young boy.

During his senior year at Hamburg High School, he led the team to the state playoffs and earned all-conference honors. Perhaps scared off by his slight frame — he stood just 6’1″ and weighed 150 pounds — no college offered him a basketball scholarship.

As a favor to his high school coach, the University of Central Arkansas offered Pippen a chance to become a student manager of the basketball team. During his freshman year, however, Pippen ended up making the team as a walk-on. Over the next four seasons, Pippen’s growth in height — he eventually stood 6’8″ — was matched by his stature among other top-level NCAA players. During his senior season at UCA, Pippen averaged 23.6 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Wife and Children

Pippen has been married twice and is the father of five children. Since retiring from the NBA, Pippen, who lives in Florida, has worked as a basketball analyst for the Bulls as well as for ESPN and ABC. Additionally, he’s worked as a special assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Bulls.

NBA Salary

In 2011, Klay Thompson signed a four-year rookie contract with the Golden State Warriors worth $9.7 million.

Thompson earned $1.7 million in his first NBA season, and his annual salary consistently increased yearly, reaching $3.1 million in 2014.

In 2015, Thompson signed a new four-year contract worth $68.9 million with the Warriors, increasing his average annual salary from $2.4 million to $17.2 million.

The deal was fully guaranteed, and Thompson’s highest earning year on the agreement was 2018 when he earned $18.98 million.

In 2020, he signed a new five-year contract worth $189.9 million with the Warriors.

He earned $32.7 million for the contract’s first year, increasing to $43.2 million for the fifth and final year.

Thompson secured $187.9 million of the contract’s value before it expired in 2024, and it’s unknown whether Thompson will re-sign with the Warriors for the 2024/25 season.

Thus far in his NBA career, Klay Thompson has earned $266.2 million.

Endorsements

In the early days of his NBA career, Klay Thompson had an endorsement deal with Nike, but the details were never publicly disclosed.

However, in 2014, he switched to the Chinese shoe manufacturer ANTA, securing a three-year, $9 million deal. Through his partnership with the brand, Thompson released his first signature shoe, the KT1.

Thompson earned $3 million/year with ANTA until 2017 when he negotiated a ten-year extension worth $80 million with the brand. His annual payments from ANTA increased by $5 million compared to the previous deal. Thompson has since released nine shoe models with the company, the most recent being the ANTA KT9.

Although his shoe deal earns him a minimum of $8 million annually, Thompson’s overall endorsement income is estimated at $20 million annually. Other NBA players who have partnered with the brand include Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward.

Many of the remaining millions can be attributed to bonuses and royalties. However, KT also earns from various sponsorships with brands such as Waiakea Water, Bevel, Mercedes-Benz, Tissot, and NERF.

What are his career earnings?

His years of success playing basketball and Olympic fame helped earn Pippen a large fortune and a number of high-paying endorsements with companies such as Frito-Lay, Visa, Ameritech Cellular TV, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Nike. Moreover, his total career earnings after 17 seasons added up to approximately $109 million. The highest-paying season occurred when he played his last season with the Rockets in 2003 with $19 million.
