The Cliff Burton modded Rickenbacker
Cliff Burton played his Rickenbacker 4001 long before joining Metallica. His jamming buddy Jim Martin who played with Cliff in 79.’ said,” he played an old Rickenbacker plugged into an effect called bass balls.” Now the bass sits in the halls of the Rock n’ Roll hall of fame museum.
Compared to a standard Rickenbacker 4001, Cliff’s bass was heavily moded. Chuck Martin was the luthier who did the modes at ABC music in his hometown in California, and most of the story of Cliff’s bass guitar comes from him. On a technical side, these were not the best mods, but they worked for Cliff.
Curiously enough, Burton’s bass was not modded to become heavier sounding but more versatile. Fitting, considering he was not your typical thrash metal bassist. In fact, I find Cliff the Metallica member with the slightest connection musically or sonically to thrash music.
The Pickups
Cliff Burton removed the factory pickups from his Rickenbacker, replacing the neck pickup with a Gibson EB Mudbucker and the bridge with a Seymor Duncan stacked jazz pickup. He also added a ‘hidden’ single coil guitar pickup on the bridge for when he needed to kick the distortion on.

A mudbucker is a vintage bass pickup widely used in the early 60s. It’s a big-neck pickup used in single-pickup vintage basses. The name ”mudbucker” comes from its muddy tone. It’s very classic sounding, at times resembling an upright bass.
It’s hard to find one today, yet at the time Cliff used it, it was one of the best pickups to get a solid low-end that balances out the aggressive guitars. There are pictures of a young Cliff playing his first bass, a Gibson EB-O, with a mudbucker. Wanting to recreate the tone might be why he used it on the Rickenbacker.
Seymour Duncan Stacked Jazz pickups are great for getting a bright bass tone with a lot of attack, especially when placed on the bridge. Whenever Cliff played distorted fast rhythm parts, such for example, on “Seek and Destroy,” the bridge pickup gave it the grind note separation.

Its very tight nature removes nearly the entire low end and raises the presence of the tone almost to a guitar’s level. Turning it on with a push/pull potentiometer would make his bass sound like a guitar with a tremendous amount of fuzz.
The wiring brought up problems and a lot of noise in the studio, so the audio engineers removed it before recording “Kill Em All.” Bad wiring and distortion don’t go well together, especially on a bass.

Creation

Is the Rickenbacker 4001 Worth Buying Today?
The Rickenbacker 4001 is a hard-to-find expensive vintage instrument, no matter its conditions. It’s an excellent choice for classic rock lovers, rockabilly, and everything 60s and 70s sounding.
To recreate Cliff’s tone, you should replace the stock pickups with something similar to what Cliff choose, as the stock pickups will not usually be able to handle distortion well. I’d leave out the single coil guitar pickup, though, as there are better choices today for a single bass bridge pickup that can do it all.
For Metal in general, not only for Cliff’s tone, I’d recommend purchasing the new Aria II signature as it’s an overall better-crafted instrument.
How Did Cliff Burton Die?
Now, I know after reading about his last words we’re collectively balling our eyes out whilst raising our drinks to heaven in a touching display of adoration, but let’s try to compose ourselves and remember Cliff’s last day on this earthly plane.
The year was 1986 and Metallica were part way through their Damage Inc. tour in support of their seminal album Master of Puppets.
They made it as far as Sweden, and, apart from a minor July skateboarding accident in which vocalist and rhythm guitar god James Hetfield broke his arm, all was well.
The shows were electric, the band was conquering the world, and their uncompromising sound was redefining the sonic landscape.
There was, however, one small problem… The bunks on their tour bus were, shall we say, substandard.
Kirk’s – the only bunk fitted with a window – was generally seen as the best, which is why on the evening of September 26th, Cliff decided that’s where he would like to sleep that night.
The men decided to draw cards, and according to Hammett’s recollection,
I know, I know… the ace of spades — How quintessentially metal.
The eeriness of Burton drawing “the death card” is also not lost on me, but I digress.
Cliff triumphed with his card selection, and claimed the spoils of his victory… Kirk’s window-adjacent bunk.
As the clocks were about to strike 7 a.m. on the 27th, the tour bus made its way through Kronoberg County when it careened off the road and flipped onto a grassy siding.
Sadly, the bunks had nothing in the way of safety restraints, and a sleeping Cliff Burton was violently thrown through the window and instantly crushed to death by the bus.
Controversy Surrounding Cliff Burton’s Death
The driver claimed that the bus skidded off the road after coming into contact with black ice, but Hetfield claims to have walked the length of the road and been unable to find any such hazard.
Lennart Wennberg, a local freelance photographer who attended the site of the crash later in the day concurred with the band’s vocalist in a subsequent interview, reporting that black ice was “out of the question” as it had been a dry morning with temperatures reaching around 2 °C.
Police inspecting the scene claimed they couldn’t find any evidence to back up the driver’s claims either.
Later, Hetfield asserted that the driver was drunk, and Ljungy detective, Arne Petterson, claimed that the tire tracks left on the road were akin to those seen when drivers fall asleep at the wheel.
Still, the driver was found to be innocent of wrongdoing in a court of law.
What Does “Should Have Been Lars” Mean?
The metal community can be known at times for our particularly brutal sense of humor, there perhaps is no better example of this than the slogan “should have been Lars” that began circulating in various forms, a morbid assessment of the incident that asserts it would have been better if Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was the one sleeping in the doomed bunk — Sorry, Lars!
One reason for fans desiring this grim reworking of the past is no doubt the comparative musical ineptitude of Ulrich — Burton was and still is considered one of the greatest bass players of all time, while Lars Ulrich’s drumming chops are frequently called into question.
Many consider Ulrich’s style – rudimentary as it may be when compared to his skin-slapping contemporaries – to be spinal in the anatomy of Metallica’s signature sound.
Others believe him to be the weak link of the group… a veritable Meg White of the metal world.

Frank Bello Revealed His Last Conversation With Cliff Burton
Anthrax bassist Frank Bello looked back on the time when he had the last conversation with Cliff Burton a few hours before the Metallica bassist passed away due to a tour bus crash, during an interview with Loudwire on April 9, 2014. According to Bello, the two bassists got food and drinks after the show during touring as usual and had conversations about the upcoming shows that night.
After chatting for some time, Frank Bello and Cliff Burton separated saying maybe they will see each other the next day and the last word he heard from the late bassist was ‘Maybe I will’ which makes them even more meaningful than usual since he left this world a few hours after saying these words.
During the interview with Loudwire, Bello said:
After our show and Metallica’s show, we’d go to catering and get something to eat for the bus. We’d all sit down, have coffee and talk about the show. Cliff and I would do that, and the last thing we’d say to each other jokingly was, ‘Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow,’ ‘Maybe I will.’
I started it the last night Cliff was alive. I said, ‘Hey, Cliff – maybe I’ll see you tomorrow.’ And as he’s leaving the room the last thing he says is, ‘Maybe I will.’ God rest his soul. He was awesome in every way.”
Although these are incredibly tragic last words that were said to a fellow musician, they aren’t the actual last words of the late bassist. They are the last words that were told by Cliff Burton to his fellow musician which made them significantly heartbreaking and emotional to his fans.
