Although still relative newcomers, Hippie Sabotage have already proven an impressively dynamic production duo. The brother tandem have produced for some of hip-hop’s freshest talent, re-imagined radio hits as chilled-out anthems and created eclectic originals that fall in the middle of that spectrum. We were lucky enough to catch Hippie Sabotage at the third installment of Subculture SF’s newly launched bi-weekly event series at Hawthorn and their performance was a perfect reflection of their diversity in sound. Their set combined the duo’s influences and different musical explorations all the while keeping the dance floor moving steadily all night. Surely, there was a plethora of unreleased material in their set but two notable moments were their remixes of “West Coast” and “Habits (Stay High),” both favorites among fans and the ninja staff. You can watch some video footage of their Tove Lo flip here.

Last Thursday was a first for us at both a Subculture SF show and Hawthorn and it’s definitely an experience we’re looking forward to doing again. Tucked away in the Financial District, Hawthorn camoflauges with its surrounding but, when you descend into the venue, it’s got an intimate, ideal set up for a DJ set. Having already hosted Kill Frenzy and Kittens, Subculture SF has done a great job thus far bringing top-notch talent as well as solid supporting acts to match. Their next show is set for April 9th and will feature Falcons, of the Athletixx crew—you can grab tickets here. Enjoy some pictures courtesy Subculture SF below.   Continue reading →

Career

Early career

Kevin and Jeff Saurer grew up in Sacramento, California. As avid skateboarders, the brothers began working on music at age 12, when they first began creating beats to accompany their skate videos. Jeff attended music school at UCSD, where he submitted the duo’s first EP for his final project, marking the first time Hippie Sabotage incorporated Jeff’s vocals into their music. The brothers lived out of a car for six months and slept on their former music professor Mike Gao’s couch, who would eventually become their career mentor. In their early career Hippie Sabotage collaborated with local artists like Yukmouth, as well as Chicago artists like Alex Wiley, and Kembe X. The name Hippie Sabotage was inspired by their fathers’ initials H.S. Hippie Sabotage released their own material in 2013 with their debut EP Vacants followed by The Sunny Album in 2014.

«Stay High»

Originally released as a soundtrack for a YouTube video in April 2013, Hippie Sabotage self-released «», their remix of Tove Lo’s «Habits (Stay High)», as a free download in September 2013. Tove Lo later heard the song and reached out to the duo on , eventually releasing it as a single and on her Truth Serum EP in March 2014.Ellie Goulding shared the remix, which vaulted it onto the iTunes charts overnight. The remix hit the top 10 in a number of countries in Europe and Oceania, as well as number one on Billboard‘s Next Big Sound chart, and has been credited for the success of the original song, as well as bringing Tove Lo into the mainstream.

Touring and album releases

Hippie Sabotage began touring in 2015, playing their first festival at Splash House in June and opening for Cherub that fall. In February 2016, they released their third EP Providence, including the single «Devil Eyes», which has since gained virality on TikTok and amassed 700 million streams on Spotify, followed by their first headline tour. The duo continued releasing projects and singles, including “Options”, «Drifter», «Running Miles», and «Wrong Time», and performed frequently on headline tours (both US and international) and at festivals.

In 2016, the duo was seen in a physical fight with a security guard in Portland, Oregon, at What The Festival, strangling the guard in a chokehold until event production crew members intervened. Videos of the altercation went viral. At the time Hippie Sabotage addressed the incident in a statement, commenting that “it was an unfortunate event that placed us in an unsafe situation in the middle of our performance». EDM concertgoers were reported still angry about the incident three years later, protesting the inclusion of Hippie Sabotage on a festival lineup in 2019. Later the duo reflected on the incident in an interview, acknowledging fan disappointment: «…that bums me out. That’s not what we’re about. We try as hard as we possibly can to show that to people. We’re about positivity and joy and respect.»

In September 2020, Hippie Sabotage released Red Moon Rising, their first album after several years of touring which allowed them time to «process a full project that represented creative thoughts.» That month the duo also partnered with Flower Records to release their «Devil Eyes OG» cannabis strain. Hippie Sabotage released their albums Floating Palace in December 2021 and Trailblazer in April 2023.

My Ride in Hell.

Review: Hippie Sabotage at Terminal 5

Hippie Sabotage performed last night at the NYC venue Terminal 5 as a part of their The Beautiful Beyond tour, and it was a sight to see. The brother duo Kevin and Jeff Saurer hail from Sacramento, California.

The doors opened at 8 pm, and the opener, Sebastian Paul, performed at 9 for 45 minutes. Paul was young and glow-y as he performed to the similarly budding crowd. His sound was ambrosial, but I could not get over him singing over his own recorded vocals. He has a great voice, and I would have favored hearing it live instead.

Sabotage went on promptly at 10 pm, and the crowd was loving every second of it. Within two minutes, Kevin had lit a joint and was already off stage and pressed against the barrier to engage with the crowd. He worked his way down the line, giving group hugs to them.

The energy was bright and heavy. When you hear the name Hippie Sabotage, you instantly think of a calm, simple, and psychedelic aura. Psychedelic, yes, but calm would be the last way I would describe their live presence.

Overall, the pair interact with the crowd a ton and perform as “hype men.” As Kevin chanted in his harsh voice, “I don’t give a fuck, what,” the room shakes as it’s repeated in every single song. The crowd went absolutely wild. Also cool was the fact that the duo passed out bottles of water throughout the entire set. At one point, Kevin carried a full case of water, tossing them to the attendees.

They encouraged the horde to crowd-surf, start mosh pits, and give them instructions on how to ‘party.’ The brothers took turns manning the decks. Kevin spent quite a bit of the set in the crowd, and there were occasions where Jeff got out from behind the decks to strike a few bluesy riffs to their songs with his guitar. They performed songs such as “Able to See Me,” “Fast Car,” and a remix of DJ Fuzz‘s hit “Tiger.”

The set was visually stunning, with theatrics of clocks swirling counterclockwise, faces of women, and a field of sunflowers. As the song “Devil Eyes” began, the crowd sang in unison and grooved to the smooth vocals and slow-paced bass track. This was probably my favorite hit of the evening. “Drifter” opened with a guitar solo from Jeffrey and ran into a heavy bass-fueled breakdown but was still mostly guitar-driven.

I was surprised by a few things. First, the crowd was much more adolescent than I had imagined by previewing and listening to the producers. Secondly, as I already mentioned, I was not expecting their performance to be so heavy. Heavy bass, yes, but the “IDGAF” mantra, no. It really is their motto as it was mentioned every few minutes. Finally, the thing I found most bewildering was that the things I found to be odd were the things I found humorous and freeing to me. I felt the more I got through the set, the youth of the crowd was not a negative thing. Their listenership is young, but to me that says they will have a following for a long time coming. And the repeated chanting became routine and lighthearted. I found myself chanting, too, and laughing about it as well. Everyone in the room was dancing, and I enjoyed watching their smiling faces and hearing the room rumble to their trills.

[Chill] Lana Del Rey – West Coast (Hippie Sabotage Remix)

Lana Del Rey West Coast (Hippie Sabotage Remix)

Stream Only

Production duo, Hippie Sabotage, have not put out much music, but the remixes and original productions we have heard from them thus far have been phenomenal. On their latest remix, the Cali-based brothers appropriately flip  “West Coast,” Lana Del Rey‘s recent single, into a mesmerizing down-tempo masterpiece. Starting off minimally, the re-work builds until around the 1 minute mark when it falls into a subtle epicness before returning to a stripped-down tone. After another drop, the last 30 seconds of the song ride the listener out in a smooth, percussion-assisted groove.

As I finished this post, I realized that all the songs including this one mysteriously disappeared from Hippie Sabotage’s SoundCloud page. Thanks to our ninja powers, though,  you can still vibe out to this one above.

Hippie Sabotage

The Sunny Album.
